The 30-year history of Dominy Construction Group has been built exclusively on providing turn key construction services for small, privately-held businesses and organizations providing site selection, pricing, permitting, development and construction of their facilities. Under his three decades as President, Mike Dominy expanded the capabilities to full-service construction, and working with local architects, completed multiple design-build projects (totalling some 7.5 Million SF ) throughout North Georgia and the metro Atlanta region.
A few Dominy owner-owned facilities would be J3 Racing; Lansdell Gallery; Legacy Beverage; Cherokee County Airport Authority office; the award-winning Atlanta Barber and Beauty Supply; Vineyards Dental Center; multiple projects for Annandale Village and many more industrial and institutional projects. Many are still our clients and friends today.
According to Mike, our clients “chose to trust DCG to execute the project on their behalf and to spend their money like it was our money. In short, we were typically hired to serve as the de facto construction department for our customers.”
Early Career
After four years in the US Navy, Mike earned a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from University of Georgia and a Master of City and Regional Planning from Georgia Institute of Technology, Mike worked as a City Planner for Greenville, SC, and later Athens, GA.
In 1981, Mike became Director of Economic Development for the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and in 1984 began a successful 11-year career in commercial real estate and development with Mobil Land Development Corporation and A.R. Weeks and Associates. When Weeks went public, Mike went on his own and partnered with Jimmy York to take over All-Steel Buildings (est. 1967), previously owned by Joe Jones, and two years later became the sole owner.
Early 2000, Don Jones was hired, first as Superintendent, and soon after as Project Manager. Dominy was contracted by Jeff Dennis, owner of US Sprinkler, for our first full-service construction project, a 10,000 SF office-warehouse-shop in McDonough. And that began the name/DBA “Dominy Construction Group," communicating our capability as a full-service commercial general contractor. In 2008, Mike secured a full general contractor's license from the state of Georgia as well as the state of South Carolina.
In December 2022, Tim Dominy acquired the company, after spending the past 15 years working his way up from laborer to assistant superintendent/superintendent to Project Manager and until the acquisition, VP of Operations.
Mike served on the boards of Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce; Jackson County Chamber of Commerce; Hall County Chamber of Commerce, Council for Quality Growth as Board member and Chairman in 1994; Braselton Rotary Club, member and chair; chaired the building committee for the Lawrenceville YMCA, the first in Gwinnett; Co-chair of the building committee for St. Monica Catholic Church (church and an office/general purpose building); and finally as a member and vice chairman of the board of Annandale Village where Mike played an active role in several major campus developments, including the disposition of excess property, expansion of the activities building; an executive/admin. building; a maintenance building; a food service building; and two (2) extended care facilities.
The word that best reflects the growth and evolution of DCG Inc. is LEGACY. Legacy in terms of history (57 years); legacy in terms of family ownership; legacy in terms of business practices; and legacy in terms of treating everyone, whether employees, customers, subcontractors, vendors, consultants or government representatives, with respect and dignity.
“I could not be prouder to have been part of that legacy, which I think will continue under the leadership of my son, Tim,” says Mike. “And I could not have succeeded without the support of my entire family, my wife, Betty, (53 years), my son, Tim, and daughter, Amanda, all of whom I treasure.”
